Privacy Policy
Effective: May 26, 2026
The short version: menu scans and analysis stay on your iPhone. If you choose to enable iCloud sync, only your food profile and favorites sync through Apple. Redacted crash reporting is optional.
What stays on your device
All of the following remains on your device and is not included in iCloud sync or diagnostics:
- Menu photos, recognized menu text, and parsed scans
- Corrections, private feedback, and order history
- Saved scan history
Uninstall the app or clear its storage and it's all gone.
Network features you control
Menu scanning (OCR)
Happens entirely on-device via Apple's Vision framework. Menu photos and recognized text never leave your phone.
Menu analysis and ranking
Processed on-device using Apple frameworks and local logic. Sift does not send menu text to a cloud analysis service.
Public nutrition catalog
Sift may download a signed public catalog of published restaurant nutrition data. Downloads do not contain your scan, food profile, restaurant search, or favorite data.
iCloud sync (optional)
When you turn on iCloud sync, Apple stores your food profile and favorite restaurants or dishes so those choices can follow you between your Apple devices. You can turn it off and clear the synced data in Sift.
Redacted crash reports (optional)
If you opt in, Sift may send crash and performance information. Reports exclude screenshots, images, menu text, dish and restaurant names, correction content, and food-profile data.
What is never transmitted
- Menu photographs
- Recognized menu text and dish corrections
- Your scan history
- Order history and private dish feedback
What may be transmitted
- Public catalog download requests
- Your food profile and favorites, only if you enable iCloud sync
- Redacted crash and performance reports, only if you opt in
Third-party services
Apple provides optional iCloud sync. An opt-in crash reporting provider may process redacted diagnostic reports. Sift does not use third-party services to analyze menu images or text.
No account required
No sign-up, no login, no personal information needed. Ever.
Children's privacy
Sift is not directed at children under 13. We don't knowingly collect information from children. If you believe otherwise, contact us and we'll delete it.
Your rights
Local scan data can be deleted by clearing history or removing the app. Synced profile and favorite data can be cleared from the app before disabling iCloud sync. Contact us with privacy questions.
Changes
We may update this policy. Changes will be posted here with a new effective date. Continued use means acceptance.
